LaVonda Roppo Obituary

LaVonda Mae (Davis) Roppo, of Baden, was a woman of great faith who passed away peacefully at home after a blessed 93 years. A longtime member of St. John the Baptist in Baden, (now St. Luke the Evangelist Parish), she had a heart of compassion and prayed daily for an ever-growing list of people. “Vonnie” was raised on a farm in Aliquippa by Samuel and Mary Davis. She worked at Stangl’s Bakery, where she met the love of her life, Arthur (Arch) Roppo. After marriage, while Arch was in the Army, her job was at J&L Steel Mill, counting the coils that came off the line. Arch and she wrote letters to one another every week. She laughed telling the story of a coworker who snuck a peek at one of her letters when she left her work station. She and Arch had two children they adored: Art (Janet Welsh) and Ann (the late Howard Guenther). She treasured her two granddaughters, Angie Roppo (Kevin Hoffman) and Ashley Heinrichs (Chris) and often told stories of baking with them, and having them set her hair in curlers. Sitting on the bleachers for many softball games and hollering at the TV during Steeler games brought out her exuberance. She was so thrilled by her three great-grandchildren: Claire, Henry and Maya. Many happy dinners, holidays and special occasions were enjoyed as Vonnie spent time with Janet’s sons (Nicklas and Anthony Vigliotti) and Janet’s grandchildren. She and Arch enjoyed traveling. They enjoyed going out to listen to bands play and to socialize with family. She was an avid walker at Economy Park even into her 90’s. Vonnie was loved by all who had the blessing of knowing her. Her door and kitchen were always open to company, most often with servings of her delicious baked goods. Left behind are her siblings: Donna Buss and Alan Gross, as well as her beloved sister-in-law, Beatrice Martin. She was predeceased by: Dorothy Seery, Patricia Petro, Helen Mickey and Robert Gross. She was a loving, attentive aunt to her nieces and nephews throughout her life, and was known for sending cards to everyone. Friends and neighbors who have shared life’s journey along with her also brought comfort and enjoyment. A special thank you to her caregivers and hospice staff who have provided solace and love to her during her last year. She is at peace and happily with her dear Arch, laughing and enjoying paradise for eternity. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the food bank of your choice.
